So you have picked out a venue, the date is set, your guest list has been whittled down, and you are on to the next step in your planning process. It’s time to start thinking about what kind of experience you want to provide for your guests during your reception, i.e., what they are going to eat and drink!
Going into your first catering meeting can be a daunting experience. Here are five things to consider before walking through your caterer’s doors:
1. What kind of experience do you want to provide your guests?
This could mean having a cocktail hour or forgoing it. Do you want to go the traditional plated dinner route, or are stations more your style? Are you a cake person or do you want to change up dessert? Are late night snacks on the table?
2. What do you want to eat on your wedding day?
It is helpful for your caterer to have a general sense of the kinds of food you like to help craft the perfect menu. Bring your Pinterest board if it helps you. If you have no idea, that’s okay too! They are professionals and can help guide you.
3. Know your guest list.
How many guests are you expecting? How many people on your guest list are children? Are there any guests that have sever allergies or dietary restrictions that you will want to accommodate?
4. Know your venue.
When you are bringing in an outside caterer, it is helpful to know what your venue provides. Is there a kitchen/prep space? Is there electricity? Are there heating and cooling elements (ovens, hot boxes, refrigerators, etc.)? Is running water available? Does the venue charge a fee to the caterer? Who is responsible for washing dishes and garbage removal? If this is your caterers first time at your venue, set up a walk though of the space together.
5. Know your budget.
It is helpful going in to have a general per person budget figured out. When thinking about your budget, do some research. Most caterers have some pricing online. Think about if your budget is just for food, or if it needs to include service as well. Is your budget a hard limit or is it flexible?
With these ideas in mind, your first catering meeting will be a breeze!
