This week in our Meet the Pros Series, we’re talking with Astrid from Astrid Thomson Photography. Learn more about her and what inspires her photography in the article below and then stay tuned for her first Love, Madison Weddings real wedding!
What inspired your business name?
I guess because I’m the photographer the logical thing to do was to put my name there. However the butterfly logo was inspired by my life. Just when I thought life could not get better for me; just when I thought my life as I knew it was over, like the butterfly who thinks is dying in the cocoon my life got transformed in something beautiful. I saw the light and started doing things that I love for the sake of loving them. One of those things was photography. Being a photographer has transformed my life in the rich a beautiful life I have now. I thank God and my family every day for the blessings and joys that I have after going through some tough times. Life is definitely GOOD!!!
How long have you been in business?
I have been taking pictures forever, but professionally for about 3 years.
Why did you choose to pursue your current profession?
Quite frankly, being in front of a desk is not for me, I’m a creative person, when I’m not taking pictures, i’m cooking, or making crafts. Being creative is at the core of who I’m, so really it was a decision I took after going through some painful times and realizing life is too short not to be happy and do what I love rather than go to work and be miserable. How many times you have to fail at something before you realize it is not for you? Well, I realize that being in front of a computer all day is not my thing. Being creative, oh well, that where I shine!
What sets your business apart?
My customer service and my dedication to provide the best for my clients. Constant communication to my customers if only to say hello and let them know I’m here to help. My customers become my friends and that is precious to me. After that I always get a call because somebody who I served previously is recommending me to somebody else. That is the joy of this line of work, you get to meet wonderful people.
Describe your ideal client(s).
Friendly, open to new ideas, budget conscious yet quality conscious. Sometimes you get what you pay for when only looking the the cheapest vendors. My ideal client is a dreamer, lover of the nicest things, not necessarily the most expensive, creative, adventurous, lover of good food, always willing to help others and one that enjoys the simple things in life and is thankful for all they have. Always looking at a glass half full.
What is your most frequently asked question from engaged couples?
It varies. Some couples don’t ask many questions, I do ask them a lot of questions about their engagement, wedding, how they met, I like to know my couples very well. Some of them ask me about some advice on vendors, others just like to recreate certain pictures they have on their wedding day, while others allow me to be as creative as I want to be.
What’s on your iPod, Pandora, etc. while you work?
Really I’m not into music that much, I listen to latin music once in a while, after all, is in my blood. But what I like is to listen to Youtube videos, I love good content and internet radio shows that take you around the world and explain things from different perspectives. I love, love, love tutorials, I have a wide library of Youtube channels with tutorial for everything, specially the ones that talk about photography and editing.
What do you like to do when you’re not working?
You will find me in the kitchen cooking something for my family. I love our Sunday family dinners, they are very special. I love reading my photography magazines, finding new recipes and painting my nails. I love a girl day with my daughter, we go to the mall, we buy something little for ourselves, we go and have our nails done and eat out. And during the summers going on vacation with my husband and kids, it is always so much fun!!
Who inspires you?
As a photographer there are many phenomenal photographers that inspire me; but as a mom and a wife, my mom and my husband. Both of them are my cheerleaders in everything I do, even if it is only baking a few cookies!
Do you have a quote you live by?
Not necessarily a quote, but the entire chapter 3 of the Ecclesiates book in the Bible. “There is a time for everything and a season for every activity under the sun…….”
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Do what you love and love what you do……..Just be happy life is too short.
