This week we’re chatting with Talwin Davis of Blu Moose Photography! Talwin recently moved from South Carolina to Wisconsin, and now calls Lake Delton home. He’s eager to book some Wisconsin weddings and bring his southern style to the Midwest! (And we’re excited to feature those beautiful days on lovemadisonweddings.com!)
What inspired your business name?
Moose was a childhood nickname given to me by my father. The old guys from my hometown still call me Moose today. My dad had other nicknames for me as well, but Moose stuck. I guess in essence it’s me paying respect to my father. He has always taught me that whatever I do in life, to do it right and to the fullest. As for the Blu… that’s simply my favorite color and I wanted to put a slight spin on it, so I left off the “e” on blue.
How long have you been in business?
I started back in 2013 with a few weddings of my own, however the majority of my experience came from second shooting that year. I still love second shooting if the opportunity presents itself, but am much busier these days with my own clients. If I had to give a timeframe it would be late summer/early fall of 2014 when I really started working as Blu Moose Photography full time.
Why did you choose to pursue your current profession?
Photography has been a passion of mine since I was a kid. In my teenager years, I was directed towards computer engineering. Unfortunately, photography took a back seat to what my parents wanted for me. However, I kept it as a passionate hobby. Friends and family kept telling me to do it as a profession but I kept refusing to embrace the notion, but I finally made the decision and made the leap of faith. It was a profession I had always wanted for myself. The great thing about doing what you love, in my case being a photographer, is that I have never felt like I have a worked a day since I started this journey! I simply enjoy photography that much.
What sets your business apart?
Two things really set Blu Moose apart…my style and my approach. My photography style is more documentary in nature with a touch of editorial and a sprinkle of dramatic imagery at the end of the session or wedding. Its 3 different styles that I feel I tie together into one uniquely beautiful story.
I keep my sessions fun and light with a laid back approach. A relaxed atmosphere with some direction eases the process for my clients. I know my “job” is to capture great images; however, I feel that also my job is to keep my clients stress free as well. Fun and relaxed the sessions have created amazing the images that my clients will treasure forever.
Describe your ideal client(s).
My ideal clients are the ones who are in passionately in love and have no problem showing that love in front of the camera. I tell my clients…”Be yourselves whether it’s goofy, lovey dovey or sexy…just be yourselves. ” I want all of my clients to look back at their images and see themselves not a pretend version. Also, their family and friends will be able to see the couple they know in the images if they are being natural.
What is your most frequently asked question from engaged couples?
“What do I wear for my engagement session” is definitely the most frequently asked question. My suggestion, “please don’t come all matchy matchy.” As a photographer, I often educate my clients on details such as attire remembering that photographers shoot e-sessions and weddings all the time, but most clients are doing this for the first and hopefully last time.
What’s on your iPod, Pandora, etc. while you work?
I love to listen to Jazz, Chill Beats or Hawaiian music when I edit. I only listen to certain artists if it is not the music I just mentioned. Sometimes I will listen to some Marvin Gaye, Dave Matthews, Coldplay, Kendrick Lamar or Childish Gambino, but mostly it’s jazz or chill beats. That style of music keeps me locked in and very focused. My favorite artist to listen to right now is Lindsey Webster.
What do you like to do when you’re not working?
I know this may sound cliché, but I love to spend time with my family. My kids are three little comedians that I call “free entertainment”. They know how to make their daddy laugh when I’ve had a long day of sessions, a wedding or an evening of editing. I also love movies, whether it is going to the theater or watching Netflix or a DVD. My wife says if I wasn’t a photographer she could definitely see me as a movie critic.
Who inspires you?
In life…positivity inspires me. I simply love infectiously positive people; their energy seems to reach my soul is such an awesome way. The attitude and that way of thinking pushes me to always think rationally and positive about everything in life. Now when it comes to photography there are several that inspire me: Cliff Mautner, Pye Jirsa, Caroline Tran, Jasmine Star and Corina Silva. The last person I mentioned has really inspired me. Corina is a wedding photographer from Myrtle Beach that I have had the honor of working with on several weddings. She has pushed me like no other when it comes to photography and has opened my mind to so many different ways of seeing beauty through the lens.
Do you have a quote you live by?
“Do it with passion, or not at all!” I’ve been taught all my life that you don’t do anything part of the way. You do it to the best of your abilities and with all you have. That way you’ve left everything on the table and leave nothing to regret.
