If you’re working on save-the-dates, invitations or other wedding day signage, you have to meet Christie Evenson! Christie works as a graphic designer by day and applies those skills as a freelance artist to create gorgeous wedding stationery suites. Christie’s talent doesn’t start at the computer though – she is a talented artist and illustrator – which opens up a new world of possibility and customization when it comes to your unique wedding materials.
In her own words: I rely heavily on illustration to personalize a piece, whether it’s inspired by a city where a couple met or a couple’s unique story. One piece I designed depicted significant moments of their relationship tucked within a floral pattern. Another couple I worked with had a destination wedding so I incorporated a skyline into the design. Maybe you share a love of the same sport, hobby or team, or have a great first date or proposal story. Integrating custom elements that are important to each couple makes for a unique piece.
These illustrative elements can be used to tie all the pieces of a wedding suite together. Separate from stationary, illustrations can be used to create more customized items at the wedding, such as engraved glasses or wedding favors. One couple Christie worked with collected growlers from various breweries they visited, so she designed a custom growler with their initials and wedding date as a keepsake. This aspect of design provides so much potential to add special, personal touches.
Madison brides and grooms, Christie has a gift for you. If you’re inviting children to your wedding you’ll need activities to keep them busy so she has drawn these CUSTOM MADISON-INSPIRED COLORING PAGES! How fun will it be for kids to color the capitol, sign their name and add their creations to your guest book?
So how does she do it?
For these illustrations and ones that I create for wedding stationary I often start by sketching rough ideas by hand. By starting with hand drawings I can decide the style of the illustration and quickly relay the ideas in my head to paper. Then I will scan the sketch into a computer and trace over it with more detail. When designing and concepting for a wedding suite I like to sketch many iterations of the same piece before bringing a few to the computer. This way I can push myself past the first ideas into unique creations. Illustrations give way to so much customization that translates well into stationary for a wedding.
