In Part One of our Meet the Pros series with Treasure People Photography, we introduced you to Patricia and Jordan Espedal. Today we’re sharing Part Two and diving deeper into their Audio Stories services.
It has been said that audio is the most visual medium because of the way sound and voice create images in the mind. There is an intimacy created between the story characters and the listener. It’s a refreshingly simple and potent way to tell stories. The world of podcasts is exploding right now as listeners discover the joy of audio storytelling.
What is an audio story?
A wedding audio story is an edited collection of stories, sounds and interviews gathered from a couple and their family and friends. It’s an oral history of a relationship recounting how it all began and how it’s grown. It’s also an authentic and timeless documentation of the actual wedding day-voices and sounds ranging from the flower girls and grandparents to the first kiss and dance.
Ultimately, it’s a love story. An audio version of couple’s heart and commitment to adventure together for the long haul.
What inspired this new service?
The meticulously refined and crafted stories on radio shows like This American Life, Snap Judgement and Storycorps deeply inspire me. Audio storytelling along these lines will be meaningful and memorable!
What is the production process like regarding the bride and groom?
Ideally a few months before the wedding I will do an interview with the couple. It can be in their home or in a quiet comfortable location. Over some coffee or beer we’ll talk through the story of how they met, what their first date was like, how they felt during that season of life. Together we’ll bring the story up to the present and talk about anything meaningful including hopes and fears about their wedding day.
These interviews have even included house/garden tours, a couple playing music together or even walking their neighborhood.
On the wedding day I will be on hand with a recorder and microphone. In certain instances I will be a fly on the wall simply capturing moments and sounds as they happen. At other times such as the reception I will be seeking out family and friends and gathering their stories, shoutouts and comments. With a couple’s consent I will mic up the groom and usually the officiant with a tiny clip-on microphone. I strive to be discreet, professional and respectful in all circumstances.
What happens behind the scenes after the interviews and wedding day to complete the story?
After all the tape is gathered from the pre-interviews, the wedding day (ceremony, reception, family, friends) the process of editing begins. Audio clips are cut down, cleaned up and rearranged in a way that tells the story of a couple’s relationship along with the narrative of their wedding day. Because of the volume of recorded moments and interviews the process usually takes 4-6 months.
What services and products are included?
For each couple who books our wedding audio story collection they can expect to have a pre-wedding interview, 7 hours of wedding day coverage, a creative audio story edited with care and creativity, raw audio of interviews, ceremony, and speeches, and your audio story on SoundCloud to share. Extra wedding day coverage and a post wedding interview are extras available also.
How long is the finished product?
Typically, a finished audio story is between 35-50 min long.
How is the finished audio story delivered to a client?
The digital file is shared via google drive and loaded on SoundCloud to share with family and friends. Your audio on a custom wooden flash drive is also available for purchase.
