This week’s Meet the Pros feature is a two-part series! Today we’ll introduce you to Patricia and Jordan Espedal, and share more about their business, Treasure People Photography! Tomorrow we’re going into more detail about a special service they offer – audio stories. We love this unique way of capturing and preserving your love story. More on Audio Stories in Part Two tomorrow!
What inspired your business name?
We were looking for a name that reflected our desire to put relationships as our first focus and not material possessions, achievements, or busy-ness. Jordan had the idea for the name while we were looking at our core values. We liked how the name can be a noun or a verb.
How long have you been in business?
I, Patricia, started my photography business in 2010 under the name Rejoy Photography. Jordan started as a second photographer with me in 2014 and we changed our name to Treasure People in 2016 when we decided to become a husband and wife photography team.
Why did you choose to pursue your current profession?
Patricia – My love for photography started in 2001 when I purchased my first film camera. I found I loved photographing emotion and real moments. Most of my photography at that time was of my family and my travels. I photographed my brothers very small wedding completely on film several years before my own wedding but a demanding day job kept me from pursuing photography professionally. When I got married in 2008, we moved from Colorado to Wisconsin and I saw it as an opportunity to pursue photographing weddings and I’ve never looked back.
Jordan – I discovered there’s a ton of joy for me in photographing couples in such a meaningful season of life. Plus working alongside my wife is the best. The inspiration for our audio work came from listening to hours and hours of great narrative podcasts like This American Life and Storycorps. I realized this intimate form of storytelling would be an amazing way to document weddings.
What sets your business apart?
To us, weddings aren’t just a job. Our interactions with couples and their families is heartfelt and genuine. When we show up on a wedding day, we’re there to see the connections you have with your loved ones and guests, and document it wholeheartedly. The audio stories we offer have the power to capture voices and stories in an authentic way that photos and videos can’t.
Describe your ideal client(s)
A couple who’s main focus is on the people. They have a sense of place and value quality over quantity, locally sourced goods, and great dance parties. Laid-back couples who aren’t afraid to be their unique selves with personal and meaningful details.
What is your most frequently asked question from engaged couples?
Will there be a lot of posing or mostly candid photos?
We try to keep posing to a minimum and instead foster an atmosphere where natural interactions are organically photographed. We want you to see your true self when looking back through your images.
What’s on your iPod, Pandora, etc. while you work?
Podcasts: This American life, Invisibilia, The Moth, On Being, Snap Judgement, Missing Richard Simmons… Plus a fledgling vinyl record collection.
What do you like to do when you’re not working?
Jordan: I enjoy playing awesome imaginary games with my girls and all things improv comedy-Ira Glass’s movie ‘Don’t Think Twice’ sums it up. Walking alone in nature with a book of Wendell Berry poems. Sweeping my front porch. Cooking while listening to records. Watching SNL skits on Hulu with my wife. Beer drinking.
Patricia: When I’m not working you can easily find me either in my garden or planning my garden, spending quality time with Jordan and our 3 spirited girls, or in community with our neighbors, friends, and family.
Who inspires you?
Elderly married couples who’ve been married 50 years and have had a million chances to throw in the towel but yet keep going and remain faithful to each other. That’s what we want for ourselves and what we hope for the couples we serve.
Do you have a quote you live by?
“Let us hope that we are all preceded in this world by a love story.” Don Snyder
