From the bride: For starters, Madison is a very special place to me! Eric and I met at our friends’ wedding in Madison in the fall of 2011. He was a groomsman and I’m friends with the bride.
Eric and I live in Oakland, California. He proposed on New Year’s Eve 2013 during a hike with our dogs, Roxy and Otto, at Point Pinole. Nature and the outdoors are our favorite part about living in the Bay since we pretty much enjoy good weather all year round. However, there was no way we’d get everyone to come to California for a wedding. I’m from Chicago and Eric’s from Madison, so we wanted to celebrate our wedding in a way that would be true to us as a couple – outdoors was perfect! That meant planning smart and quickly since we didn’t want a long engagement. Hoyt Park is exceptionally beautiful and significant since Eric played there as a child/teen and Eric’s mom and her siblings have fond memories of their childhood there as well. I wanted to be celebrate in a place that was meaningful.
My mom suffered a stroke almost a month after we were engaged – the same day I asked my brother to be my Man of Honor – and Eric’s family could not have been more supportive. His mom would drive from Madison to Chicago every other weekend to spend time with her – who does that?! (On my wedding day, my mom told me I’m so lucky to have Eric’s mom for a mother-in-law and I absolutely agree!) My mom did not wallow in self pity; instead, she was determined to walk me down the aisle and the pictures reflect her hard work over the months. She is so strong! The entire weekend was beautiful, but that day was magical. There was so much involvement from our families – Eric’s mom, Mary, and I planned so much of the wedding ourselves and our families were there to help execute. All of our vendors were wonderful, but Lovely Ember Photography – that couple will forever be in our hearts. They are TREMENDOUS! They captured moments we had forgotten about. All of my family goes back to those pictures to relive those very special moments.
