From the Bride: Our summer wedding was one not many local people have seen before; it was a Persian/American fusion celebration. We had been dating for almost ten years before tying the knot, so we (and our family and friends) couldn’t wait for the big day!
Both the ceremony and the reception took place at the Monona Terrace over the 4th of July weekend. Almost all of our guests were from out of town (some from as far as New Zealand, Sweden, and England), so for them it was a destination wedding. The day started out with a “First Look” on the steps of the State Capitol building. After getting some shots of us and our wedding party, everyone walked over to line up for the big event. The weather could not have been more beautiful, and the American ceremony started at 4PM on the rooftop of the Monona Terrace, overlooking Lake Monona.
After the ceremony, the cocktail hour immediately began with custom drinks and appetizers. Then, the guests started filing downstairs into the grand ballroom to be seated for the Persian ceremony. Traditionally, a persian ceremony consists of traditions that date back to the 2nd millennium BCE, and have changed little since then. The bride and groom are seated before the guests in front of a table that is filled with different items that all symbolize different things (such as happiness, prosperity, and fertility). Then, female relatives take turns holding a cloth over the bride and groom’s head and rub sugar cones together over the cloth, symbolizing a sweet marriage. The couple then dip their pinkies into a cup of honey and share it with each other, again symbolizing sweetness for their new marriage. And then, dancing! So much dancing.
The reception continued with dinner in the grand terrace overlooking the lake. Once cake was served, guests filed into the ballroom for first dances. A surprise appearance was made by Bucky and the UW marching band, which had everyone up on their feet clapping and dancing along. It was an incredible day, celebrating two people, two cultures, and lots of love.
