Michael and Abby met and fell in love at University of Wisconsin so it was only fitting their wedding took place on campus. Their day was complete with nods to (and an appearance from!) Bucky Badger. Just married? Submit your own real wedding gallery here.
From the Bride:
Micheal and I met in 2011, when we were both undergraduate students at UW Madison. My roommates, Sam and Melissa, were throwing a conjoined birthday party and Michael was invited to the party by a mutual friend of Sam’s. We bumped into each other, and Michael used his go-to pick up line, “What’s cookin good lookin?” Which, as you can imagine, I was not impressed by. However, we started talking and realized they were both pursuing a major in genetics. I mentioned my job at the workout facility on campus, and how I was dreading work at 8 AM. Michael mentioned how he might stop by next morning to workout and say hi. Fast forward to 8 AM the next day… I was at work thinking, “No way is that guy I met last night going to get up this early to workout.” Just as I completed this thought, I saw Michael. We began talking, Michael asks for my phone number…and the rest is history!
What is your proposal story?
Our relationship moved to long distance in August 2015 when Michael began medical school at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, and I was studying at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine pursuing my PA degree. Due to our busy academic schedules, we saw each other infrequently, maybe once a month. The week before the proposal, I had a fairly light schedule and thought it would be a great weekend to visit Michael in Milwaukee. I discussed this idea with Michael who said that it wasn’t a good weekend to visit, too much studying to do. Little did I know that Michael had other plans. Secretly working with my PA school friend Amber, Michael was planning a surprise visit to Madison that weekend for the proposal. Amber asked me to study after school that Friday in the medical school library. She told me she wanted to practice physical exam skills for an upcoming exam. As I walked into the practice room after class, there was Michael! At this point I just thought Michael surprised me for the weekend, a proposal wasn’t on my radar. Before I knew it, Michael was down on one knee and I said, “yes!” Michael was so nervous that he forgot to open the ring box during the proposal. We both laughed, and Michael got back down on one knee and put the beautiful ring on my finger. They celebrated that evening enjoying the view of the capital and delicious food at Graze while sharing the news with friends and family.
What makes you the perfect match?
We balance each other out and make a great team by supporting and encouraging each other in our goals and aspirations in life. Just like Michael’s new favorite saying, “Teamwork makes the dreamwork.”
What did you enjoy most about wedding planning?
Making the day ours. Having Gigi’s Cupcakes make our desserts because it was our favorite post-exam treat. Getting married at Union South because it was our favorite study spot. Even though we have since moved away from the Madison area, Madison will always have a special meaning to us. We met in Madison and fell in love with the city and the campus as we were falling in love with each other. It made perfect sense to us to get married in the city where our story began.
What made our wedding day special?
Spending our day with our favorite people in our favorite city and hitting all of the Madison highlights! Unknown to us, our parents surprised us with the UW Marching Band at the reception, it was a blast!
